VCD (.dat) files and raw Mpeg1 files together on a CD-R. Is it possible?

I tried looking for info about this but had no luck. I can't imagine that I'm the only person that want's to try this. But.... Is it possible to create a CD-R with say, 50% of the disc having VCD (.dat) files etc and the other 50% having raw high res. Mpeg1 files. The idea is to create a single disc that can 'easily' be recognised by both a stand alone DVD player and a PC. I've tried using Nero and have had limited success. However although I am able to mix both types of data on the CD-R the .dat section does not run properly because it's not finalized. It's a mad idea I know but has anyone had any success?

i remember reading an old thread saying that nero can automatic import *.dat files; if not, convert your *.dat -> *.mpeg using vcdgear. you weren't to clear about how you burn it, but to watch a (s)vcd on a dvd player, it has to be burn as (s)vcd; but i don't have a dvd player, so i guessing. not sure about the high resolution mpegs.
RE: VCD (.dat) files and raw Mpeg1 files together on a CD-R. Is it possible?
I am creating a 'show reel' CD-R for a friend of mine. He currently sends examples of his work, to prospective clients, on two CD-R's. One VCD (.dat) disc, is for use with a DVD player. And one high res. Mpeg1 disc, is for use with a PC. Each CD-R contains the same 12 files and runs for less than 10 mins. The VCD (.dat) disc contains around 75MB of data. And adopts the VCD std of 352x288, 25fps, 1150kbps + audio. The Mpeg1 disc contains around 182MB of data. And has been encoded at 720x576, 25fps, 4000kbpsVBR + audio. The idea is to create 1no CD-R that incorporates both types of files that can be played, easily on both a DVD player and PC. Unfortunately, SVCD is no good because not all stand alone DVD players can read them and not all PC users have mpeg2 codecs installed in their PC's - Hence Mpeg1. I suppose what I'm trying to find out is, whether it's possible to do this using non-commercial CD creation software.

Any VCD-capable software should be able to do what you are trying to achieve ... haven't tried it myself, but VCDEasy has the option ((S)VCD -> ISO Files), just add your hi-res video file there or put it in a separate folder. 8.3 names only. Beware, though, some dvd standalones have a "smart navigation" menu which might kick in when it detects additional av files (usually only happens when no VCD content is avialable).

this might be the samething smiller667 just said, so anyway; i have this vcd which has an extra folder in the vcd menu (ex. cdi, ext, mpegav) entitled "extra" with has some mpeg files (vcd complaint for some reason) in it, anyhow, just load you *.dat or standard complaint mpeg into nero (s)vcd and move your hi-res mpegs into a folder (call it extra if you want) and highlight it in (nero) file brower -> right click -> ctrl+1 and burn it. since i never tried it, i don't know what's the outcome.
RE: VCD (.dat) files and raw Mpeg1 files together on a CD-R. Is it possible?
ok, i just tried burning it, and it worked (meaning the files are there), but since i don't have a dvd player and my friends dvd don't accept cd-rw, i can't be sure if it will work property. forget ctrl+1, it's Copy to compilation
RE: VCD (.dat) files and raw Mpeg1 files together on a CD-R. Is it possible?
What a pisser! Would it be too much to ask you to create a CD-R version and try it on your friends DVD player. If you have managed to create a disc that works on both a DVD player and a PC this would be great. At last, a multi standard Mpeg1 CD!
RE: VCD (.dat) files and raw Mpeg1 files together on a CD-R. Is it possible?
you should have put a question mark at the end of that sentence, it kind of seems a little demanding; i played the RW at my neighhor's house (annoying) and it worked, accept for the corrupt video of the 1st second of video, probably causes the RW was scratch. the time it took me to reply, you could have tested it yourself

I'm sorry my friend but as I said I don't know too much indepth stuff about CD burning software. I'm glad it works though! But............................................. In the end, how exactly did you do it? Thanks again. Darryl

#1 open-up Nero, choose vcd in it's menu #2 drag your *.dat or *.mpeg into the vcd menu #3 put all your hi-res mpeg into one folder (name it extra, or whatever) #4 in File Browser, click on the folder where your hi-res mpegs are, right-click, copy to compilation (that would have just added that folder to your vcd menu. #5 File -> Compilation Info -> Label -> Volume Label and give it name #6 File -> Write CD #7 play in your DVD player to see if you worked.
