PTF with a athlon 1600XP

Hi I'm thinking about buying a new computer set up and these are the specifications of the system i'm looking at processor: athlon 1600XP memory: 256mb ram @133mhz motherboard: gigabyte 72XE Harddrives: 40gig @7200rpm seagate 20gig @7200rpm any comments on if you think this would be a good settup etc. would be greatly appreciated! Also if anybody ahs had problems with a similar setup it would be good to hear what they were... also what operating system would be best to use-windows from 98 to XP +??? thanx in advance

first off, you can't use Windows XP with pro tools.. well not yet. i have a fairly similar setup as what you want, and i've tried it with pro tools free. it worked, except each track would be out of sync with the next track, and i'd have to manually line up each track. appaerantly, this is only a PTFree problem, and it sounds like this is fixed in their full version. But your system sounds awesome. It also helps if you keep your disks defragged, and optimize windows by cutting out all the crap you don't need, there's various articles around here on how to optimize your PC for audio recording.

Thanks for your response to my question... So PTF doesn't work with XP at all? Does this mean I can use windows 98 on the athlon and use PTF? Sorry I'm used to using a Mac type set up Thanks Sam

Hey Sam, no, Protools doesn't work on XP at all, not the free version or any other version. It only works on 98, ME, and maybe 95 - i can't remember. Yes, you can use 98 on the athlon. It's called an Athlon XP b/c its "optimized" for windowsXP, but its purely a marketing ploy - 98 will work fine on it. I've heard Windows ME sucks, but I dont know. I like 98. Hope this helps. Jason
