64gb SD card as oneshot library in laptop?

MessageAuthor

as i recently posted, i'm moving to my laptop full time so that my composition computer and live computer are one and the same. i'll be using 2 internal ssd hds for system, project, and library, but ssds are expensive and i'd like to use the SD card reader in my laptop to squeeze in an extra 64gb of storage space. i'm thinking that it'd be a great place to store smaller library material, like oneshots. all of this material would be backed up and the card would never leave the laptop - it would essentially be a third hd in the laptop. is there any reason i shouldn't do this? as an additional note, i have reaper copy all associated files into the local project folder, so my projects wouldn't have to constantly reference the sd card. thanks, brains

I see no reason not to do it. SD cards are like little SSDs, basically.

Actually I don't think you would even have to save locally. If you have SDHC compatible SD card port in your laptop, that one can have enough throughput to be actually used as a hard drive, so I think you should be fine by simply reading from it all the time.

Sounds interesting! What other uses could a card like this have that could boost performance?

It sounds perfect for one shots or anything with small file sizes. A 50KB one shot would load in 5.8ms with the 0.8ms access time + 10KB/ms transfer rate of an SD card vs the 10ms (rough) access time of an HDD + transfer rate, eg 10.5 ms @ 100MB/s.

I never thought about it, but using SD cards does sound like a good idea for storage and for sharing files locally. Edit: maybe it is only a good idea if you plan to do little writing to the sd. See first 5 minutes or so of this:
