Recording drum kit

I have a Mac G4 and Digi001. I have one Grace 101 mic pre and several SM57-s and 58's. I use a AKG kick drum mic. I usually pic a 57 on the top and bottom of the snare. 58's for two overheads. My drum tracks always come out sounding "demo" quality. Can someone give me advice on how to get them to sound "full" and more like a "real" drum track?

RE: Recording drum kit

your problem is 58's as overheads. generally you should be able to record a "full" sounding drum kit with just a pair of overheads, everything else is extra - so do whatever you must to get a good overhead sound; use quality condensers, preferably large diaphrams but if you're on a budget, even cheapo rode nt5 pair will do wonders compared to your current setup. also, it would be good to also have a room mic (condenser) to get real reverb into the mix. always remember, drum kit is a kit and should be recorded as such. it's not a sum of all parts but a drum KIT.

RE: Recording drum kit

Come on now, you know there are no rules in the field!!!! I had one thrash band where the drummer had a nine piece kit. He had everything so tight, and his hi-hat was so low that I had no place to put a mic!! I threw one underneath at first, but on his particular kit, it didn't sound very good. I ended up micing the shell! It sounded good too! I have been meaning to try that again in the studio. I've done so many goofy things live out of desparation! I sometimes don't have any prior info on the bands before the show, so I sometimes don't even know what instumentation they are going to have before they get there! G
