Do I nned a Pre-Amp

MessageAuthor

I know this is a really, really lame question. First my simple set up M-Audio Fast Track MKII 2 M-Audio 3 Pro monitors Reaper (like duh) XML V63M condensor mic (stands/cables etc..) Is there a necessary reason why I would need pre-amp for anything? I am only "attempting" to make my own custom backing tracks - I am using MIDI files I downloaded from the net, splitting those into seperate tracks (drums, bass etc..) and recording any guitar parts (me). I mic my amp cause I have a Digitech processor and prefer to use effects before recording rather than adding FX after the fact (just me personally) So, I only have 2 inputs - guitar and a mic that uses phantom power Yeah, eventually I will upgrade my equipment - I got a "starter" kit for now

That "mic" input is a preamp so you actually already have one. I'm guessing you are asking if you need a nicer pre-amp and the answer is no, because if you don't know what you're doing just yet a nicer preamp isn't going to make a ton of difference...but good luck getting going. cam

no. it's nice to have good pres. personally I think good preamps are really important, but if you're just starting with a minimal low-budget setup, you don't need to worry about it. your interface has preamps inside of it. they are not the greatest, but they will do the job.

No, you don't need a preamp unless you're trying to record really loud stuff like trumpets or such BUT even in these cases your FastTrack channels gain should work perfectly OK, in theory.

Thanks All who replied. Yeah, my set up is basic as basic can get - for now. As soon as $ frees up, I will upgrade my equipment. But for now this will do the job - it is a good starting point/trainer.
